Form 990-N - An Overview

  • Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard), is one of the variants of the 990 series forms that are filed by small tax-exempt organizations as part of their annual tax filing requirements.
  • Form 990-N can only be e-filed, and there is no paper form available. Also, Form 990-N doesn’t require a lot of information to be reported. The organizations are just required to report their basic details such as Name, EIN, Address, tax year they follow, etc.

Who Must File Form 990-N?

  • The tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts less than or equal to $50,000 for the corresponding tax year must
    file Form 990-N.
Note: These organizations can also choose to file Form 990-EZ or 990 instead of Form 990-N.

Are there any Additional Requirements for filing Form 990-N?

  • No! Unlike the other 990 forms, which require the organizations to attach Schedules for reporting additional information, Form 990-N doesn’t require the filing organization to include any Schedules.

When is the Deadline to File Form 990-N?

Can the Form 990-N Deadline be Extended?

  • No! The deadline for filing other 990 forms, such as Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, and 990-T, can be extended by filing Form 8868 on or before the deadline.
  • However, the deadline for filing Form 990-N cannot be extended.

What happens if an Organizations Fails to File Form 990-N?

  • There are no penalties for filing Form 990-N late. However, if a small tax-exempt organization fails to file Form 990-N for three consecutive years, it may be subjected to automatic revocation of tax-exempt status by the IRS.
  • If the organization loses its tax exemption, it will be treated as a taxable organization and will be subjected to federal income taxes.
